The group for high field physics
at the Institute of Physics, CAS, was established by Professor Jie Zhang
in 1999. Our group focuses on the interactions of femtosecond intense
laser pulses with plasma targets and their applications in table-top
energetic particle beam generation, physics of high energy density in
matters, Fast-Ignition fusion related topics. In the past years, we
have worked on hot electron generation, control, and transport in high-intensity
laser interaction with a variety of targets such as solids, liquid,
liquid droplets and clusters. A few novel features such as collimated
hot electron jets in these interactions have been observed. We also
have been working on the self-guiding of ultra-short laser pulses over
a long distance in air, which may find applications in Lidar remote
sensing of atmospheric pollutants as well as lightning protection and
triggering. Laser guiding over a kilometer has been observed using our
20TW laser facility. Our other research topics include X-ray lasers,
ultra-short X/g-rays and other radiation sources, technologies of powerful
ultra-short laser systems and applications. These experiments have been
conduced on three different laser systems: 5mJ/150fs, 36mJ/25fs, and
600mJ/30fs, the latter two were developed under the supervision of Prof.
Zhiyi Wei in our group. A new laser system 10J/50fs and a big target
chamber are under construction. Together with experimental effort and
laser system development, there are also related theory and simulation
activities including the development of various simulation codes, which
are supervised by Prof. Zheng-Ming Sheng. Currently there are six staff
members and in particular there are about 25 graduate students both
for master and doctoral degree and 2 postdoctoral researchers. Our group
keeps a close tie with related Japanese institutions including the ILE,
Osaka University, and is one of the main members in China involved in
the proposed China-Japan-Korea international research collaboration
in the development and application of ultrashort high intensity lasers.
