The Institute of Laser Engineering (ILE), Osaka University, is going to host the 4th IAEA Technical Meeting (IAEA-TM) on Physics and Technology of Inertial Fusion Energy Targets and Chambers at the International Conference Center Kobe, Kobe, Japan, on Sep. 13, 2007 in a style embedded in IFSA 2007.  The previous meetings were held in Madrid, Spain (June, 2000), San Diego, USA (June, 2002), and Daejon, Korea (Oct., 2004).

1) Purpose

In the field of laser fusion research, big projects aiming at ignition and burn on a single-shot basis have started in many countries.  Demonstration of the technology for an integrated reactor system, including repetitive target injection, tracking and engagement,  is the next milestone leading towards inertial fusion energy (IFE).  The success of these integrated demonstration systems will increase the confidence in IFE and open new science opportunities along the way.

The International Atomic Energy Agency plays a pro-active role to catalyze innovation and to enhance worldwide commitment to fusion. To contribute to activities of the IAEA, the ILE will host the IAEA-Technical Meeting on “Physics and Technology of IFE Targets and Chambers” jointly with the 5th International Conference on Inertial Fusion Sciences and Application (IFSA) taking place in Kobe, Japan, September 9-14, 2007.  The purpose of the Technical Meeting is to review the progress and the perspectives in realizing IFE power plants, including developing countries.

The scope of this meeting covers the following areas in physics and engineering related to IFE reactor technologies:

Physics related to reactors and reactor design

Target fabrication focused on mass production

Target injection and tracking

IFE reactor systems

2) Technical Sessions

The technical program will consist of an invited oral session and a contributed poster session.  These sessions are scheduled on Sep. 13, 2007, are within “Category II (Fusion Technology) of IFSA2007, and are composed of “IFE Reactors” and “Target Fabrication”.  The meeting will provide an opportunity for formal and informal discussion.  The authors are encouraged to submit their full papers to Nuclear Fusion.

2) Organization

Prof. Dr. Kunioki Mima, Director of the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University and Co-chair of IFSA 2007, will organize the oral session and poster sessions for the TM.

3) International program committee

Program Committee Chair ; T. Norimatsu, ILE, Osaka University, Japan
Co-chair ; J. Sethian, NRL, USA
Co-chair ; D. Goodin, General Atomics, USA
Co-chair ; M. Perlado, Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Spain

4) Expenditures and financial support

No registration fee will be charged by the IAEA for participants to the Technical Meeting. Host services such as accommodation, meals, social programmes, etc., are to be arranged between participants and the Host. As a general rule, the IAEA does not pay the costs for attendance at the meeting (i.e. travel and living expenses) of participants. However, limited funds are available to help meet the cost of attendance and participation of a few selected specialists mainly from developing countries with low economic resources. Generally, not more than one grant will be awarded to any one developing country. The grants awarded will be in the form of lump sums usually covering part of the cost of attendance.

If governments wish to apply for a grant on behalf of one of their specialists, they should address specific requests to the IAEA Scientific Secretary at the International Atomic Energy Agency to this effect. Governments should ensure that applications for grants:

a) are received by the IAEA before 25 May 2007.

b) are accompanied by a duly completed and signed Grant Form C and an estimate of the flight costs from/to their country and Vienna, from a valid travel agent.

c) the participant has an accepted contribution.

Applications that do not comply with the conditions mentioned above will not be considered.

Awards will be announced around 15 June 2007.

5) VISA

Designated participants who require a visa to enter Japan should submit the necessary application to the nearest diplomatic or consular representative of Japan as soon as possible.
