参加報告:アメリカ LLNL, サマーインターンシップ 2023 (阪大理・JIN YUAN DUN)

As a part of JSPS Core-to-Core program, I have participated in the High Energy Density Science (HEDS) Center Grad Student – Summer Internship 2023 from June 12th to September 15th at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. During the internship, I worked on the particle-in-cell simulations of shocks in plasma with Dr. J. R. Angus. This research aims to use particle-in-cell (PIC) algorithm to simulate the shockwave formation in plasmas with different charge state Z. In this work, we investigate the structure of plasma shock wave, including how energy is partitioned between ions and electrons, as a function of charge state Z.

During the internship, I have also attended several faculty tours. I have visited NIF (National Ignition Facility), SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and CAMS (Center of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry). From these torus, I have learned a lot of things such as the laser system design and the structure of target mounting and cooling system in NIF, the history of SLAC and their research right now, and how to monitoring secret nuclear tests by measuring Be isotopes in the atmosphere at CAMS.

I have also attended the poster session held by HEDS center in LLNL to present my work during the internship. These results will also be presented at APS-DPP 2023 conference.

As a result, the internship this time let me learned a lot about the PIC simulation, and give me an opportunity to obtain the work experience. This chance also allow me to meet a lot of researchers working in High Energy Density Science, increased my knowledge of the field.
