MECMATPLA workshop 2024: A fulfilling week in the snowy landscapes of France

From February 3rd to February 10th this year, I had the opportunity to join the International School and Workshop on Matter in Extreme Conditions for Magnetized Plasmas. Held in Montgenevre, France, MECMATPLA turned out to be a great experience, both scientifically and personally.

Organized by LULI (Laboratoire pour l’Utilisation des Lasers Intenses) and in partnership with many other laboratories from countries such as England, France or Japan, the workshop featured lectures as well as a poster session. During the week, lectures were given in the morning for a three-hour session and in the evening for a two-hour session. In the afternoon, we were able to ski and enjoy our time in the snowy landscapes of France. Everyone enjoyed discussing new matters in physics while eating a warm croissant after skiing.

Being in Montgenevre with those prestigious researchers and students for a week, having 5 hours of fascinating lectures a day, being able to discuss and question physics mysteries and new discoveries: all of it was so interesting and personally fulfilling. The poster session, which was organized in the midle of the week, was a great opportunity for students to present their work and slowly dive into the research world. I had the pleasure to present a poster on one of the works we have been doing at the Kyoku Gen Plasma laboratory (ILE), tackling Weibel instability and ion acceleration in laser-driven plasmas. It was my first time attending such a workshop and I am so grateful for the captivating discussions I witnessed, as well as for the people I have met.

Overall, I had a great time not only being in that scientific environment, but also making those new friends that I wouldn’t have met otherwise. I hope other Japanese students will be able to attend the workshop in the future and enjoy the French food as much as I did! (Osaka Univ., Special Auditing Student, Lucile Fouquet)

2/2から9にかけて、フランスのMontgenèvreで開催されたMECMATPLA2024に参加してきました。私は、“Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of CH4 and H2S mixture at planetary interior conditions”のタイトルでポスター発表として参加しました。
普段、論文中でしか目にすることができなかった氷物質のレーザー衝撃圧縮実験や第一原理分子動力学法を専門とする研究者と対面で議論して、興味深いお話を聞くことができました。さらに、ポスターセッションでは惑星を専門とする研究者とお会いし、自身の研究につながり得る議論も行うことができました。
全体を通して、非常に貴重な経験を得ることができたことにありがたく思います。(大阪大学工学研究科・村山大輔)

フランス・モンジュネーブで開かれた第5回MECMATPLA Winter Schoolで題目“Enhancement of heating intensity using high-contrast high-intensity laser and cone interaction”にてポスター発表をしました。
今回は磁場に関連した講演が多かったのですが、中でも強磁場の生成について研究している方の公演は実際の実験の様子の映像がありインパクトがあったので印象に残っています。惑星の内部構造に関する発表では「Superionic」が多く取り上げられていました。正直初めて聞いた言葉だったのでとても興味深く面白い話でした。最終日にはICFについての講演があり自分の研究分野の現状について知ることができました。ポスターセッションでは自分の研究に興味を持ち、話を聞いてくれた人たちと様々な議論ができました。また自身の研究と近い研究や興味深い内容を発表していた人との会話ができたことも非常に有益な時間になりました。初めての海外ということもあり緊張もしましたが、大変貴重な経験となりました。(大阪大学理学研究科・唐木優河)
