–Title–
Ultra-high power beam generation via plasma optics at NIF

–Abstract–
Future laser applications necessitate advancements in pulse energy, power, and intensity that exceed the limitations of conventional solid-state media. Plasma optics offer a promising solution due to their enhanced resilience to damage; however, they require thorough characterization in both linear and nonlinear response regimes. The plasma amplifier platform at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has successfully transferred energy from up to 21 beams, achieving nearly 8 kJ in a single 1 ns pulse. Past work has explored critical aspects such as the time history of power transfer and the amplification of a seed beam while focusing and will be summarized in this talk. Recent efforts have involved designing a second amplification stage aimed at boosting a short pulse (100 ps) to higher power levels, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of fast ion wave responses at the kJ energy scale. This presentation will provide an overview of potential applications for plasma optics—including Inertial Fusion Energy—as well as a summary of NIF-scale plasma amplifier experiments and simulations relevant to these applications. The presentation will conclude with the design of an upcoming Discovery Science shot day featuring a two-stage plasma amplifier.

Work performed under the auspices of the U.S. DoE by Lawrence Livermore National Lab under Contract DE-AC52-07NA27344.
