18/10/2021-12/11/2021 Experimetns @ ILE, Osaka Univ.

Project members from all over Japan gathered at the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University to conduct preparatory work from one week before the experiment and the following three Gekko XII + LFEX laser experiments for three weeks.

"Magnetic reconnection with laser-driven capacitor-coil target"
(PI:Hantao Ji - Princeton Univ., USA)
"Investigation of the structure and rate of a laser-driven magnetic reconnection"
                                                                        (PI:Taichi Morita, Kyushu Univ., Japan)
"Particle acceleration by magnetic reconnection using capacitor-coil target"
                                                                        (PI:Youichi Sakawa, Osaka Univ., Japan)

These are experiments related to "magnetic reconnection," which is one of the themes of our Core-to-Core Program.
The anti-parallel magnetic field in a plasma generated by either irradiating the capacitor-coil target or flat plate target with Gekko XII is reconnected, and magnetic reconnection occurs. At this time, the energy of the magnetic field is converted into the energy of the particles, and the particles are accelerated. The magnetic field structure is constructed with a proton back-lighter using LFEX laser or magnetic probe. Plasma parameters such as temperature, density, and flow velocity are measured by collaborative Thomson scattering, and the structure of plasma is measured by visible self-emission. The electron and ion velocity distributions are observed with Electron spectrometers and Thomson parabola.
We are looking forward to the analysis results.

18/10-20/10/2021 High Pressure Conference

The 62nd High Pressure Conference of Japan was held at Himeji. The first "REAL" conference after COVID-19. The number of seat were limited but a lot of researchers got together for Poster session.

20/09-23/09/2021 JPS 2021

JPS 2021 Autumn Meeting, The Physical Society of Japan, was held by On-line.
Nowadays, most of the conferences are taken place by On-line, so some students will graduate without experience “real conference”. We hope them enjoy a feeling of tension on stage at the next JPS2022, planed at Okayama University and Okayama University of Science in March, 2022.

27/08/2021-18/09/2021 Experimetns @ ILE, Osaka Univ.

Project members from all over Japan gathered at the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University and conducted the following three Gekko GXII experiments for more than three weeks, including the weekend preparation and withdrawal period.

"Studying the Interplay Between Shocks and magnetic Fields"
                                                  (PI:Paul Mabey - LULI, France)
"Experiments of collisionless shocks propagating into magnetized plasma"
(PI : Ryo Yamazaki - Aoyamagakuin Univ., Japan)
"Empirical research of self-reformation of collisionless shock"
(PI : Shuichi Matsukiyo, Kyushu Univ., Japan)

These are experiments to generate a collisionless shock by applying an external magnetic field of 5-7 T with a few Torr of N2 gas.
The external magnetic field was stably applied, and good results were obtained in optical diagnostics and Thomson scattering measurements.
We will carry out analysis and try to publish within the final year of the project.

02/08/2021-06/08/2021 Experiments @ ILE, Osaka University

At ILE, Osaka University, preparation for experiment to be conducted from Aug. 30 to Sep. 17 with GEKKO XII, HIPER Laser was done on Aug. 2 to 8.
"After Corona", we had experienced the cancellation of the experiments and it made us disappointed. But recently, we can deal with such conditions very well by infection prevention and thanks to all the attendees cooperation, we can get good preparation.
Installation, alignment, and test operation of Thomson scattering measurement, optical measurement, and the coil system for applying an external magnetic field were carried out smoothly.

19/04/2021-21/04/2021 Attending HEDS2021/AsianCore seminar

International Conference on High Energy Density Sciences (HEDS 2021) was held online as one of the specialized conferences under the umbrella of "Optics and Photonics International Congress (OPIC2021)".
This year's HEDS 2021 was held with Conference co-chair: PI Sakawa, Steering Committee chair: Sano, Steering Committee: Fukuda, Kuramitsu, Matsukiyo, Morita, and Tanaka, with laser astrophysics as the main theme.
The conference was held only online due to COVID-19, but it was a fulfilling conference with presentations by project members and researchers in the field of high-density energy science in Japan and overseas.
At the last Asian Core session, presented by members from Japan, China, India, and Taiwan, we were able to have a meaningful discussion about the research we are conducting in the project, even though we were unable to come and go with each other in the final year of the three-year project.
